The Guardian: «Obama opened a door between Cuba and the US. Why is Biden closing it again? «

On 6 April 1960, the US diplomat Lester D Mallory wrote a memo advocating an embargo “denying money and supplies to Cuba, to decrease monetary and real wages, to bring about hunger, desperation and overthrow of government”. Sixty-four years later and the policy that Cubans call el bloqueo (the blockade) is still in force. It hasn’t achieved its stated aim of overturning the Cuban Revolution – but it has fueled years of desperation and justified anger.

Barack Obama came to recognize this by his second term. During a historic 2016 visit to Havana, he said that he had come “to bury the last remnant of the cold war in the Americas” and “to extend the hand of friendship to the Cuban people”. By then his administration had already made tangible steps in that direction.

What the Western media isn’t telling you about the protests in Cuba

ON MARCH 17, people in Santiago, a city in eastern Cuba, took to the streets to protest at the increased blackouts and food shortages they had been experiencing. The protest occurred as shortages generated by the US blockade of Cuba worsened across the island. Instead of lifting the blockade or taking Cuba off the state sponsors of terrorism list, the US government and corporate media have once again exploited the spontaneous protest to launch “a new counter-revolutionary media offensive,” claim US-based Cuba solidarity activists.

“If Biden really wants to stand by the Cuban people, if the US government were to actually care about the Cuban people, they would immediately end this blockade,” said People’s Forum executive director Manolo De Los Santos.

Cuban President denounces destabilizing attempts from the U.S.

 Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel denounced today that U.S.-based terrorist groups are encouraging actions against the country’s internal order, taking advantage of the harsh situation the island is undergoing.

On X social media the Head of State also informed that some people have expressed their dissatisfaction with the deficit in the national power service and the distribution of food.

Cubans sent hundreds of tweets to Biden requesting of the blockade

Cuban families on both sides of the Florida Straits are today the most affected by the unilateral coercive measures imposed by the United States on the Caribbean nation, denouncing numerous Twitter voices.

On Sunday, hundreds of messages sent by Cubans inside and outside the country and people in solidarity reached U.S. President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill Biden, through that social media network. They urged the lifting of the economic blockade against the island.
