The blockade of the United States towards Cuba was impost in an unilateral manner, 55 years ago. More than the 70% of the Cuban population has born and ground up under the application of this policy, which unable the economic development of Cuba and constitutes a flagrant violation of the human rights to Cuban people.

The last 16 June president of the United States of America, Donald Trump, announced the upsurge of the economic, commercial and financial blockade towards Cuba, as a fundamental component of his policy towards The Island. Fact he has reaffirmed in his speech in front of the Unites Nations during the General Debate of the General Assembly´s 72nd period of sessions, in last September .

With his policy towards Cuba, the President Trump reverts the improvement reached in the bilateral relations after the 17th of December 2014.

The blockade has caused to Cuban people (for almost six decades) accumulated damages which reach 822 thousand 280 millions of dollars.

It is time to put an end to such flagrant genocide against the Cuban people.

On November 1 the United Nations General Assembly will vote for the 26th consecutive year on a resolution calling for an immediate and unconditional end to the United States’s blockade of Cuba.

In 1991, when Cuba first presented its case to the UN, no vote was held as many countries succumbed to pressure from the US and forced the resolution to be withdrawn.

 

The following year it was successfully heard — gaining 59 votes in support, three against (US, Israel, Romania), 71 abstentions and 46 absences.

Since then, Cuba has won increasing support and votes for its position from the international community.

Simultaneously, the US itself, and its policy of aggression and blockade, has become progressively more isolated.

The abstentions and absences have fallen away and in recent years votes have been near unanimous in support of Cuba.

It took the US 24 years to finally admit its policy had been a failure. On October 26 2016, in a historic vote, the then US ambassador to the UN Samantha Power abstained, making the final count 191 in favour to two abstentions — Israel voted with the US as it had for the previous 25 years.

En las noches de verano, en los pueblos de la costa de Cataluña, Cuba es todavía un recuerdo y una nostalgia. Un recuerdo que huele a ron quemado y una nostalgia que suena a la música de las habaneras, mientras el mar rompe y la gente se reúne a contar viejas historias: las memorias de los abuelos que se fueron a la guerra o a buscar fortuna a Las Antillas. 

En Cataluña, como en el resto de España, Cuba perdura como una vieja herida, como un lejano «paraíso perdido».
