Sigue leyendoScottish MP Elaine Smith formally nominated Cuba’s Henry Reeve international medical brigades for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize, the Cuba Solidarity Campaign (CSC) reported on Tuesday in the United Kingdom.
In its nomination letter to the Norwegian committee that grants the annual prize, Smith, which is also a representative of the Scottish Labor Party in the Parliament of that British territory, highlighted that since 2005, the members of the Cuban medical contingent have been assisted more than four million people affected by epidemics and natural disasters in Latin America, Africa, Asia and the Caribbean.
While the world is suffering through the coronavirus pandemic, it has been truly inspirational to watch how the small island of Cuba has used its experience and professionalism to assist other countries in the fight against Covid-19.
The virus affects people regardless of their nationality, and Cuba has shown just how countries that are able can help those who need assistance.
“The solidarity built by Cuban internationalism is the kind of expression needed in communities everywhere,” noted renowned American actor Danny Glover as he addressed the Caribbean island’s medical collaboration.
In a web conference organized by the Cuban solidarity networks in the United States and Canada, the artist pointed out that the response given by Cuba to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the sending of medical brigades to more than twenty countries, began 60 years ago.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez denounced this Friday that the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has earmarked an additional two million dollars to attacking Cuban medical brigades.
