Cuba and a unique story on terrorism

On March 19, 1998, Prensa Latina reported an unusual event from Geneva: Cuba, the country that the United States had been describing since 1982 as a sponsor of terrorism, was acknowledged as a victim of this type of actions.
A report presented at the 54th session of the United Nations Human Rights Commission stated that the attacks on tourist facilities in Havana in 1997 were perpetrated by people funded from the United States.

The document, drafted by the special rapporteur of this organization on the use of mercenaries as a means to violate human rights, admitted for the first time that Cuba was a target of this type of activity.

However, Cuba had been denouncing the sabotages and terrorist acts, which have killed some 3,400 people and crippled over 2,000, since the triumph of its popular revolution in January 1959.

Such actions were carried out with the complicity of the United States, where groups dedicated to these purposes operate and the main organizers reside under the protection of its authorities,

Nevertheless, the September 1997 events, in which a young Italian, Fabio Di Celmo, was killed, could not be silenced, due to the confession of Raul Ernesto Cruz, from El Salvador, who was arrested in Cuba as the perpetrator of the attacks with explosives in different tourist facilities in Havana.

Over two decades later, the paragraphs of the text on these cruel and absurd practices could still be valid, since selective assassinations, attacks and the organization or incitement to perpetrate violent acts as a means to try to subdue other countries are still used.

Cuba knows this well and has been included again in the list of nations that supposedly sponsor terrorism, at the will of a US administration that did not say a word to condemn the attack on the Cuban Embassy in Washington on April 30, 2020.
