Saturday 20 May Solidarity with Venezuela at The Guardian, Kings Place, 90 York Way, King´s Cross, London, N1 9GU (11 am-1pm)
The violent scenes of chaos and destruction on the streets of the Venezuelan capital Caracas are the direct product of a viciously reactionary ruling class that is attempting to overthrow the gains the Bolivarian Revolution has achieved for the working class over the last 18 years. In this they have not just the funding of US imperialism but the direct support of most of the world’s mainstream press. Imperialist media and privately-owned Venezuelan press dishonestly portray masked groups of rioters as ‘pro-democracy’ protesters facing down repression from the government; they completely censor the mass mobilisations by working-class supporters of the Bolivarian government. These lies, disseminated across the globe, are designed to provide the ideological framework for what is in reality a coordinated attempt at a right-wing coup.
The Guardian has been one of the British newspapers leading this media war. It recently called for the country’s democratically-elected socialist president Nicolas Maduro to be given ‘pariah status’. This is a newspaper that constantly backed attempts to undermine former President Chavez up to his death in 2013, disseminating lies and propaganda even as the PSUV government, with the help of socialist Cuba, reduced poverty, provided free health care and education, devolved power into the hands of local collectives and built homes for the working class. In 2002 the Guardian welcomed the US-backed coup that attempted to depose President Chavez and hand power back to the ruling class. Today, the paper refuses to condemn the sustained and coordinated violence of counter-revolutionary rioters as they attack public buildings, including hospitals, schools and socialist cities, leading to the death of dozens of people – the majority of them government supporters.
The RCG stands with the Bolivarian Revolution, driven by the Venezuelan working class. Join us outside the Guardian building to counter the lies and censorship propagated by the bourgeois press – expose their tacit support for a US-backed coup in Venezuela.
We stand against all media lies and silence aimed and censoring the voices of the oppressed around the world. Bring flags from your struggle to the demonstration.
